POLICIES AND procedures
Biting Policy:
Updated December 2019
Step 1: The teacher will treat the injured child and redirect the biter. The injured child will be provided with TLC and the area that was bit is washed and ice applied if necessary. The biter is told that we do not bite our friends and a more appropriate activity is provided for the child. If the child is over the age of two years, a short time out will be given to the child. Children that are under two years old have not yet reached the age of reasoning. The brain development does not allow them to reason with the discipline of a time out. Therefore, time out before that age is ineffective.
Step 2: The teachers will use positive reinforcement, redirection, repetition, and shadowing to attempt to minimize the continued behavior of biting.
Step 3: An incident report is filled out for the child who was bitten and the child who bit. Both parents are informed of the incident. The teacher is NEVER allowed to discuss confidential information with any family member other than the child’s family being discussed.
The policy is listed below:
Please understand that although biting is a typical developmental response, it can be harmful to the other children in care. If you have any questions regarding the biting policy, please come to the UCD office.

Late Policy:
University Child Development closes at 5:30 PM. Parents are asked to allow a sufficient amount of time to collect child’s belongings, artwork, speak to a staff member (if necessary) and vacate the premises by this time. If the parent/guardian knows that they will be late to pick up their child, they should notify UCD. Due to the operational and staffing costs incurred when a parent/guardian is late to pick up their child, a late fee will be charged.
When the parent/guardian is late, UCD will…
Late Fees...
After 5:30 PM a $30.00 late fee will be incurred and a $20.00 late fee for every 15 minutes past 5:30 PM. These fees must be paid in full before the child can return.
Staff on duty will complete a late fee payment form, which must be signed by both staff and the parent/guardian. By signing the form, the parent/guardian recognizes that they were late and agrees to the amount due.

- Contact the parent/guardian at the numbers on the child’s file.
- If contact with parent/guardian cannot be made, calls will then be made to the emergency contacts in the child’s file to make arrangements for the child to be picked up.
- In the event that the parents/guardians/emergency contacts cannot be reached, UCD must, by law, contact the appropriate authorities and follow their instructions.
- If the parent/guardian is repeatedly late, staff will notify the director who will then meet with them regarding the situation.

Terminate Services Policy:
Should the Center Director determine that the child or the parent(s) cannot adjust to the center's program and/or follow the guidelines, UCD reserves the right to terminate services with five (5) working days’ notice.
Behavior Policy:
First Offense: A verbal warning is given, with an explanation of the offense.
Second Offense: “Time Out” in the classroom under direct teacher supervision. Teacher will multiply one minute times the age of the child. (Example: A 4-year-old child will sit in “time out” for 4 minutes.)
Third Offense: The teacher will call the director to the room to discuss with the child the offense for which he/she is being reprimanded.
Fourth Offense: Parents will be contacted for a conference, with the approval of the director. The director, teacher, and parents will discuss a solution to that particular offense.
Repeated Challenging Behaviors:
If a challenging behavior becomes a consistent problem, the parent will be notified of the situation and a written plan of action will be created.
If the child remains unruly, the parent may be called to remove the child for the remainder of the day.
Please understand that UCD is responsible for the safety and well-being of ALL children present and at no time will one child’s behavior be allowed to be a risk to others.
If the problem continues without any improvement or cannot be resolved within a reasonable amount of time arrangements may need to be made for the child to receive care elsewhere.
